Siemens employee wins damages for hearing loss

Mr. R of Billinghay, Lincoln was a former Engineering Fitter for Siemens (previously known as Ruston & Hornsby Limited, EE Diesels Limited, Ruston Gas Turbines Limited, European Gas Turbine Company Limited and Alstom Power UK Limited) from 1961 to 2000. He is now 65 years old and suffers with hearing loss, which was caused by excessive noise at work.

Mr. R was based at the factory on Waterside South in Lincoln, but also worked around the surrounding sites as well. He was exposed to the extreme noise of gas turbines, locomotives and diesel engines. There was also the noise of lathes and hammers in the machine shop.

The sites where Mr. R worked failed to provide him with adequate hearing protection until the 1980’s and failed to warn him of the dangers of exposure to excessive noise levels. The wearing of the hearing protection was never enforced. Mr. R confirms that no training in the wearing of the hearing protection was ever provided.

It was not until 2007 that Mr. R came to realise a problem with his hearing. Mr. R said, “My hearing has gradually been deteriorating. My wife complains that she constantly has to repeat herself and that I no longer listen to her. I often ask her to repeat herself.

WE Solicitors LLP were able to settle Mr. R’s claim for the total sum of £4500. Mr. R was very happy with the outcome.
