Noise Induced Hearing Loss in the Entertainment Industry.

WE Solicitors are increasingly being contacted by people who work in the entertainment industry and are concerned that their hearing has been affected by working in noise.  People working in bars clubs and pubs are at risk and recent legislation and warnings from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have gone some way to raising awareness of noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus in the industry.

Previously many people thought that noise induced hearing loss was mainly associated with heavy industries such as engineering, ship building and factory work.  However the noise in many bars and clubs exceeds the safe levels that employees are expected to work in.  The general rule of thumb is that if you have to shout over the background noise to a collegue who is standing 6 feet away then the noise levels are excessive.  In many bars and clubs it is difficult to be heard to even order a drink.

WE Solicitors are acting on behalf of DJ’s and nightclub staff whose hearing has been damaged due to noise at work.  Many workers believe there is nothing they can do but  the HSE recently published a useful guide to help people.

Employers are under a duty to provide staff with suitable hearing protection and there are products available for use in the entertainment industry.

We expect far more entertainment industry workers to be coming to us in the next few years with damaged hearing and tinnitus. Tinnitus is a high pitched whistling or whining sound in the ear which can be quite debilitating and cause severe sleep loss.

If you have worked in noise and are concerned about your hearing or if you have been diagnosed with noise damage and tinnitus please contact us either by email or on freephone 0800 294 3065.
