Mr Sullivan settles his Noise Induced Hearing Loss case for £5,000. Mr Sullivan was exposed to excessive noise whilst working from British Steel as a Foreman Fitter at Ebbw Vale Steel Works this caused him to lose some of his hearing. Although his employment and exposure to loud noise ceased in 1975 after many years his hearing began to deteriorate gradually. He was unable to hear the doorbell and had the TV turned up loud. Mr Sullivan simply put this down to the deterioration everyone experiences overtime. It was not until he underwent a routine hearing test and prescribed hearing aids that he was told part of his hearing loss had been caused by his noisy work. Mr Sullivan then contacted we solicitors who investigated his claim and agreed a good settlement without the need to go to court.

The causes of hearing damage in both ears (symmetrical deafness) are often the result of long term exposure to excessive levels of noise within industrial / heavy manufacturing workplaces, almost always described as industrial deafness.

In 2009, a Court Of Appeal ruled in a case concerning noise induced hearing loss and safety in the workplace. It contended employers were liable for any risk that would give rise to injuries, such as hearing damage that existed, not just for a reasonably-foreseeable risk, as was previously held.

It has often been claimed that we live in an increasingly noisy world. The raising of awareness and introducing health & safety legislation has no doubt been responsible for the vast improvement in working conditions over the past 40 years in industrial, manufacturing, factory and building site environments for a workforce who were at most risk from developing industrial deafness.
