Machine Operator wins nearly £3000 damages for hearing loss

Mrs. J of Cimla, Neath, was a former machine operator for the Metal Box Company Limited, from 1965 to 1969. She is now 66 years old and suffers with hearing loss, which was caused by exposure to excessive noise at work.

The factory in Neath, where Mrs. J worked, failed to provide her with any hearing protection and failed to warn her of the dangers of exposure to excessive noise levels.

Mrs. J was exposed to the noise of the various processes within the factory. The noise came from the slitters, open-tops and the general line. There were hundreds of machines in operation at any one time.

It was not until 2007 that Mrs. J came to realise a problem with her hearing. Mrs. J said, “My hearing has gradually been deteriorating over the past few years. The television volume has increased and I have difficulty following conversations, often asking people to repeat themselves. I thought my hearing was deteriorating as a result of my age.”

WE Solicitors were able to settle Mrs. J’s claim against the Metal Box Company Limited for nearly £3000. Mrs. J was delighted with the outcome.
