Lengthy Waiting Times For Hearing Aids Are Unacceptable

The lengthy waiting times for hearing reassessments in parts of Wales has been highlighted recently, with people in some areas facing a wait of more than 17 months.

Responding these reports of unacceptable waiting times, Richard Williams, Director of Action on Hearing Loss Cymru, said: “We are disappointed to see patients with hearing loss waiting for more than a year in some cases to have their hearing reassessed. Yet, patients in Wales tell us that this length of waiting time is not unique to Cwm Taf University Health Board.”

Richard also highlighted the risks of leaving hearing loss unaddressed, saying: “Without treatment, worsening hearing loss can lead to isolation from friends and family. Studies have shown that older people with hearing loss are more than twice as likely to develop depression as those without.

“Thanks to our lobbying, the Government introduced reporting on audiology waiting times. Patients should not have to wait more than 14 weeks to be reassessed and we are disappointed that this has not led to improvements.

“We will shortly be launching our Hear to Help hearing aid support service in the Cwm Taf area, which we hope will improve the pressure on the audiology department. Our Hear to Meet service is also available, giving people with hearing loss the opportunity to meet up over a cup of tea or coffee and exchange experiences and information.

“As the UK’s largest deaf charity, we’re backing an effective, holistic hearing loss rehabilitation process, including the provision of hearing aids and cochlear implants, access to communication training and lipreading classes, as well as emotional support through hearing therapists.”
