While a grumble is generally the limit of our response to having been awoken by the dawn chorus, the more aggravating annoyance of incessant dog barking may necessitate reporting as an anti-social nuisance, if the noise becomes a regular occurrence. However, there is a more serious complaint, which can arise over a period of time when actually working with dogs, and has led in some instances to noise induced hearing loss.

With head and neck cancer claimed to be the world’s sixth most common type of cancer, there now seems to be a further cause for concern as a 2010 study has revealed that nearly three quarters of head and neck cancer patients receiving radiation therapy experienced hearing loss.

A January 2011 public health study has revealed that girls are as equally vulnerable to experiencing a certain type of hearing damage as boys. While this may not be considered news to most people who see both teenage boys and girls almost permanently wearing earphones plugged into mobile phones or MP3 players with an obvious sound leakage indicating high volume settings, but the survey results show that 1 in 6 are suffering some form of noise induced hearing loss.

Incredible but true, is the little known fact that one in every six people experience some form of ringing, whistling or ‘rushing’ sounds in their ears at some time in their lives. If experienced only temporarily, it may not even be especially noticed or recognised as an episode of tinnitus, and considered possibly symptomatic of hearing damage.

The relationship between noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus has always been a source of debate and subject to continued research. Generally, a noise that seems to originate in the ear or head, typically experienced as a ringing or whistling sound, is mostly temporary and will soon disappear as unaccountably as it appeared.
