As a result of wilful malpractice or neglect throughout most of the UK’s industrial past, the traditional engineering and manufacturing workplace has become forever associated with countless hundreds of thousands of workers enduring constant excessive levels of heavy machinery noise every single day of their working lives. Mr C wins £3000 payout after suffering Noise Induced Hearing Loss arising from his employment with Joseph Lucas Ltd from 1965 to 1971as a Design and Development Engineer. His role involved the design and develop of transmissions for hydraulic JCBs. The designs were placed on a test rig and analysed by being run with electric pumps however the development project was abandoned due to the failure to reduce the noise produced.

According to a recent report into the after affects of radiation therapy treatment for head and neck cancer, patients appear to more likely to experience hearing loss and become more disabled by its effects than those who do not receive treatment.

Recent research figures have found that around 55 million or approximately, sixteen percent of adult Europeans suffer from hearing loss significant enough to cause a negative affect in their daily life. The study also shows that about 71 million adults aged 18 to 80 years have a hearing loss greater than 25 dB, indicative of having sustained hearing damage, yet, only one in six use hearing aids.
