Former East Lancashire Paper Mill wins compensation of £5,000

WE Solicitors have obtained settlement of £5,000 for Mr. Platt a local gentleman who worked for East Lancashire Paper Mill and Robert Fletcher & Sons Limited.

Mr. Platt worked for East Lancashire Paper Mill in Radcliffe from 1965 to 1977, initially as a ‘Conditioner’ and later as a ‘Reeler man’. Mr. Platt describes the noise as “exceptionally loud, so much so, I had to lip read as a form of communication”.

Mr. Platt was not provided with any hearing protection at East Lancashire Paper Mill and was not given any warning about the dangers of exposure to excessive noise.

In 1977 Mr. Platt started work with Robert Fletcher & Son Limited at their Mill in Stoneclough. Mr. Platt was exposed to excessive noise from Pulping machines, Refining machines and Paper Making machines. Mr. Platt describes the noise levels as “hideously loud”.

Mr. Platt was shown an article in the local paper by a friend that he had worked with at Robert Fletcher & Sons, following this Mr. Platt contacted WE solicitors to discuss his exposure to excessive noise.

WE Solicitors arranged a hearing test, following the test Mr. Platt was advised that he suffered hearing loss that could have been caused by his exposure to excessive noise with East Lancashire Paper Mill and Robert Fletcher & Sons Ltd. Mr. Platt also suffers from ‘ringing’ in his ears, which can also be caused by exposure to excessive noise.

WE Solicitors arranged for Mr. Platt to see an ENT Consultant about his hearing problems, the report prepared by the ENT Consultant was used to negotiate an out of Court settlement of £5,000 with the insurers of East Lancashire Paper Mill and Robert Fletcher & Sons Ltd.

Both Mr. Platt and WE Solicitors are very happy with the outcome of the case.
